Don't Wait Until After The Holidays!

The holidays bring joy. It's a time to relax and spend time with family. A time to unwind, reboot and reminisce about...{insert record scratch sound effect!) NOW is the time to start your voiceover coaching! I understand the notion of waiting until after the holidays. We've all been programmed to think this way but imagine starting your coaching now so that you would be halfway to getting a demo produced by January! Adweek and other advertising publications are predicting that 2023 is going to be a banner year for the advertising business, which is fantastic news for voice actors!

If you're tired of hearing your friends and siblings compliment you on your voice, yet you're getting a little too comfortable sitting on the fence, now is the time to jump off and pursue something you have always wanted to do.

Before I started a few decades ago, I got too comfortable with coming up with a new excuse every week as to why I should put voiceovers on the back burner. While it felt like the right decision at the time, I felt depressed. Like I was spinning my wheels. Yeah, money was an issue, as I know it may be for many new talents reading this blog. I get it! But life was moving fast, and I sure as hell wasn't going to get any happier or make more money every year in radio! So, I took the plunge. I hired a voiceover coach to help me get started and stuck with him for a couple of years before my business took off like a land speeder! But, wait! Am I allowed to make Star Wars references in this blog?

The bottom line is there will always be an excuse. Here are several in the usual order;

"I need to wait until after the holidays

"I need to wait until I get my tax refund."

"Summer is crazy, so I want to wait until the kids return to school."

I want to be clear that I am not suggesting these are not valid reasons NOT to pursue something you love. I am suggesting that there will always be a new excuse every month. Honestly, I don't know what I would be doing or where I would be without a man named Larry Russo. He was the voiceover coach who not only pushed me to do this but wouldn't let me off the hook when I constantly found a new excuse for why I couldn't sign up for his courses. It was one of the best decisions I had ever made, and I haven't looked back since. Yes, there have been tough months. It hasn't been one long golden path but I've maintained a steady base of regular clients over the years! In voiceovers, you don't need 100 clients to make a good living. You need 6-10 regular clients who come back to you repeatedly with work. That should always be the goal.

So, yes! Happy Holidays to one and all but if this is something you've been mulling over for too long, don't let Christmas get in your way! Just don't email me when Love Actually, A Christmas Story or Die Hard is on. And yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie. So let's put that debate to rest!
