Top 15 Most Popular Voiceover Demo Genres

Recently, a study was conducted on the top 15 most effective voiceover demos. This was based on a survey of around 100 talent agencies, production companies, and ad agencies. I remember starting back in 1989, when everyone had a commercial and narration demo on cassette! I had commercials on side A and industrial narrations on side B. I still use it to market myself today. Kidding! But it does make for a nice vintage decoration in my studio.

Without further delay, here are the top 15 most popular voiceover demo genres. For those brand new to the VO business, I've written a description for each genre.

1. Commercial Demo

   Radio, TV, streaming ads, social media ads, retail, conversational, comedic, heartfelt, announcer, and lifestyle reads.

2. Corporate Narration / Explainer Demo

   Company videos, brand stories, product explainers, internal messaging, and business-to-business content.

3. Automotive Demo

   Dealership ads, luxury vehicles, truck spots, regional auto campaigns, lease offers, rugged reads, high-energy retail, and sleek brand spots.

4. eLearning / Training Demo

   Online courses, employee training, educational content, software tutorials, and instructional modules.

5. Audio Drama Demo

   Scripted fiction, podcast dramas, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, ensemble scenes, emotional reads, and character-driven storytelling.

6. Character / Animation Demo

   Cartoons, animated series, toys, kids’ apps, comedic characters, exaggerated reads, and creature-style performances.

7. Video Game Demo

   Heroes, villains, soldiers, fantasy characters, sci-fi roles, combat barks, emotional cutscenes, and creature voices.

8. Audiobook Demo

   Fiction, nonfiction, memoir, romance, mystery, thriller, young adult, and character dialogue.

9. Promo / Imaging Demo

   TV promos, radio imaging, podcast promos, station IDs, show opens, trailers, and high-energy branding.

10. IVR / Telephony Demo

11. Medical Narration Demo
