"How do I get started?" I hear this question every day and it's a good one. Simple. By getting started. I know this sounds like a no-brainer but in my long tenure as a voice actor/coach, it seems to be the biggest hurdle. Plenty of fear and excuses. I get it. I've been there. For years, it was difficult getting out of my own way but I never gave up on my dream of becoming a professional voice actor.
Many new talents have the wrong idea of what getting started means. Some think getting started is immediately signing up for a P2P casting site and sending in auditions. Some think getting started is making a huge investment into audio gear before they've read any commercial copy or had any training. Some think getting started means recording their own demo without any coaching and posting it on SoundCloud. These are valiant efforts but this is not the right way to get your voiceover business moving in the right direction.
